Pep Guardiola has backed Burnley boss Vincent Kompany to one day return to Manchester City as manager.
City made it eight consecutive wins in all competitions after a comfortable 3-1 win at home to Kompany’s Burnley side on Wednesday evening.
Julian Alvarez celebrated his 24th birthday with an early brace for the Premier League champions, heading home Matheus Nunes’ cross for the opener at the Etihad, before scoring a second just six minutes later.
The result was put beyond doubt just seconds after the half-time restart, as Rodri slammed home from Phil Foden’s cut-back to make it three.
Guardiola’s side were rarely troubled in the clash, but Ameen Al Dakhil scored a stoppage-time consolation for the struggling Clarets. Guardiola was full of praise for beaten opponents Burnley and believes ex-City captain Kompany will one day take his position as manager at the Etihad.
“Today all the teams have people just focusing on set-pieces. It’s a massive thing in modern football. We won in the Cup at Tottenham from a corner, and today we practiced it and it worked,” Guardiola reflected on the game, as per the BBC.
“All the teams try to do it, it’s another weapon. All the teams try to use it.
“Today the game was not close. There are games with this score that feel closer, this was not. We had players who have less control than usual, we had more runners, more speed.
“Burnley is not an easy team to face, they never give up. Today, we won because of the quality of players we have, not because we controlled everything or where better at all aspects.
“I have the feeling Burnley did not get the result they deserved to take. Vinny sooner or later will finish here. I have the feeling that he will finish here. He is already a big manager, what he did last season with Burnley.
“You can see the ideas they have, the way they try to defend. I like what he does.”
