Bayern and Manchester United consider De Zerbi

Bayern Munich and Manchester United are considering Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi as their next manager.

Bayern will seek a new direction in the summer after confirming that Thomas Tuchel will leave at the end of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the club’s top target and has the ‘unanimous backing’ of the board, according to Sky Germany, though De Zerbi has been placed on a shortlist of alternatives given rival interest from Liverpool in Alonso.

De Zerbi has won admirers for his attractive brand of football at Brighton and led the Seagulls into Europe for the first time with a top-six finish in the Premier League last season.

Barcelona, whose head coach Xavi will step down in the summer, also like the Italian, while the Manchester Evening News claim Manchester United are considering De Zerbi.

Erik ten Hag’s underwhelming second season with the Red Devils could lead to change with new minority owners Ineos currently overhauling the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been described as ‘not completely sold’ on Ten Hag, who has overseen a difficult campaign that has seen United beaten 15 times in all competitions. Sixth in the Premier League table, Ten Hag’s team face an uphill task to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

The decision on his future could be made by Dan Ashworth, as the Red Devils look to appoint the Newcastle director. Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave at St James’ Park as the two teams discuss a deal.
