Bayer Leverkusen will reject all approaches for in-demand midfielder Florian Wirtz this summer as the German champions look to keep together their title-winning team.
Leverkusen were crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in their 120-year history on Sunday, as Xabi Alonso’s side thrashed Werder Bremen 5-0 to win the title with five games to spare.
The success of the German outfit has captured the attention of wealthier clubs across Europe, after Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year hold on the Bundesliga.
Florian Wirtz has been a star of the side this season and the 20-year-old scored his first career hat-trick in the title-clinching win over Werder Bremen at the weekend.
The midfielder has 11 goals and 10 assists in the Bundesliga this season and is set to play a prominent part in Germany’s bid for success at the 2024 European Championship on home soil.
Leading clubs in England and Spain, alongside Bayern Munich, have checked in on the progress of Wirtz this season, who has bounced back from an ACL injury to re-establish himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
However, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Leverkusen will turn down all bids for Wirtz at the end of the campaign. The German champions ‘may have to make one big sale in the summer’, though Wirtz will not be allowed to leave.
The player is believed to be keen to remain with Leverkusen for another season at least and looking forward to gaining Champions League experience at the BayArena in 2024/25.
