Key Arsenal pair face late fitness test ahead of Bayern clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka will be assessed ahead of facing Bayern Munich.

The Gunners are in Germany ahead of the second leg of their Uefa Champions League quarter-final tie against the Bavarian outfit having drawn the home leg 2-2.

Odegaard is a doubt for the game after being replaced by Emile Smith Rowe towards the end of Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Arteta was vague about the issue that forced the Norwegian off the pitch, stating after the game that he was “feeling something, he could not continue”.

However, Odegaard was spotted in training on Tuesday, raising hopes that the midfielder will be fit to face Bayern.

Meanwhile, Saka is a slight doubt for the game after he was seen limping in the closing stages of the Villa defeat, just two weeks after returning from injury.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Arteta confirmed the two players will have to undergo an assessment of their fitness before deciding whether they can start against Bayern.

“Obviously we had only less than 48 hours to recover for the game and we’ve done very little training. So we’ll assess them tomorrow and see how they are,” he said.

Asked how important this game is for Arsenal’s season after stumbling in the Premier League title race at the weekend, the Arsenal boss responded: “All the preparation has been to achieve that [a Champions League semi-final].

“Everything we have done for 10 months, and last season, tomorrow we have an opportunity to make it happen.”
