Manchester United fear missing out to Liverpool for top target

Manchester United fear missing out to Liverpool in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Gyokeres is a target for a number of the Premier League’s top clubs after a stunning season in Portuguese football, with the 25-year-old having recorded 36 goals and 16 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

The Sweden international arrived at Sporting from Coventry City last summer and has been a huge success, spearheading Ruben Amorim’s side to the top of the Primeira Liga table.

However, the potential departure of Amorim, who has been linked with Liverpool and Barcelona, has cast doubts over Gyokeres’ future with the player’s agent admitting he will consider a move at the end of the campaign – should the head coach leave.

Manchester United have placed Gyokeres near the top of their wish-list as the Red Devils look to bring in support for Rasmus Hojlund. The 21-year-old has impressed in spells this season, but a more mature option is being sought at number nine, as Anthony Martial prepares to leave Old Trafford.

However, HITC are reporting that Erik ten Hag’s team fear missing out on Gyokeres to a divisional rival. An expected absence from Champions League football, alongside Amorim’s potential appointment at Liverpool, could complicate matters.

The 39-year-old would reportedly want to sign some of his Sporting squad should he move to the Premier League and Gyokeres could be a top target, given Liverpool’s recent wastefulness around goal.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also considering approaches for the Swede in the summer, who has a release clause of (£85.3m) in his contract at the Estádio José Alvalade.
