Barcelona re-open contract talks with Ousmane Dembele

Barcelona have re-opened contract talks with Ousmane Dembele as the club look to agree an extension to the winger’s deal.

Dembele has entered the final months of his contract in Catalonia and will be a free agent this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain and a number of Premier League sides having been linked with the signing of the France international.

Sky Sports are reporting that Barcelona have now re-opened negotiations with Dembele’s representatives, in what marks a remarkable turnaround following the club’s stance in attempting to force the winger out in January.

Barcelona had seen talks break down with Dembele after the 24-year-old refused an extension on reduced terms, the stalemate having led to Xavi handing the winger an ultimatum to leave in January or sign a new deal.

Since then, however, Dembele has emerged as a prominent figure in Barcelona’s recent renaissance and he has provided seven assists across his last five La Liga appearances.

Dembele has provided more assists in 2022 than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues and also boasts best assists-per-minute ratio. He trails only Karim Benzema for goals created in Spain’s top division so far this season.

Dembele signed for Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth up to £135m in 2017, but has struggled with fitness problems for much of his time at the Camp Nou.
