Man City chairman unconcerned over Guardiola future and says there’s no ‘pressure’ to win CL

Khaldoon Al Mubarak says he is unconcerned over Pep Guardiola’s future at the club and says the Man City boss is under no ‘pressure’ to win the Champions League

Guardiola is approaching the final season of his contract at the Etihad with his long-term future remaining uncertain.

City are keen to tie the Spaniard down to a new deal after his success in recent seasons with the Premier League champions having won four of the past five league titles under Guardiola’s guidance.

Mubarak, however, remains relaxed about Guardiola’s situation and the City chairman says the club are ‘enjoying every moment’ of the manager’s reign.

“It is a partnership that has done wonders over the years,” he told the club’s official website.

“It is approaching its seventh year and next year is going to be an exciting chapter of this partnership, and we’re enjoying every moment of it.

“We’re achieving great things together and this conversation will be had at the right time, at the right pace, and with the pace, time and framework that works for Pep.”

The one trophy that has remained elusive for City is the Champions League, with the club following a runners-up finish in 2021 with a semi-final exit to Real Madrid this time around.

Mubarak insists there is no additional pressure on Guardiola to achieve European success however, and says City will continue to aim to win each and every competition.

“You don’t need to put any extra pressure on Pep, he puts enough pressure on himself. It is the exact opposite – I try to bring back the pressure because I think he puts too much pressure on himself.

“The pressure is not of winning this competition or that competition. We approach every season to win and to try to win every competition we compete in.”
