Man City eyeing up Chelsea midfielder

Manchester City are reportedly interested in a deal to sign Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic.

Kovacic’s Chelsea contract has just over a year to run, and the club’s new owners are keen not to let players go into the final year of their deals.

N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic are among a whole host of players whose contracts expire in 2024, with Kante believed to be close to signing a new deal, and Jorginho having already been sold to Arsenal.

Now, according to the Telegraph, Manchester City have been alerted to Kovacic’s situation and are potentially interested in doing a deal.

Midfield is known to be an area that Pep Guardiola is looking to strengthen in his Man City side, with Jude Bellingham the club’s top transfer target. The England international is, however, on the radar of a whole host of clubs around Europe, with Kovacic a potentially much cheaper alternative.

City could be set for an overhaul in their midfield in the summer, with Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva both being eyed by Barcelona, while Kalvin Phillips hasn’t managed to break into the side since his £42 million move from Leeds last summer.

Aside from Kovacic, Chelsea also have Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva all approaching the final year of their contracts.

Aubameyang is expected to leave after falling way down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, while Mount has already knocked back a number of contract offers, with Liverpool having been linked.
