Jordan Henderson is leaning towards leaving Liverpool in favour of accepting a lucrative offer from The Saudi Pro League.
Henderson has been offered a three-year contract at Al Ettifaq that would quadruple his Liverpool wages. After initial reluctance to make the move, The Athletic are reporting that Henderson is now leaning towards the ‘life-changing’ proposal.
Al Ettifaq are under the management of Steven Gerrard and have made a move to unite the new head coach with his former Liverpool team-mate.
Gerrard has had a key role in the club’s pursuit of the England international, who is contracted at Anfield until 2025. Al Ettifaq would need to agree a fee with Liverpool for Henderson, if the midfielder informs the Reds of his desire to move to Saudi.
Henderson featured 43 times in all competitions for Liverpool last season, but faces increased competition for a midfield place following the signings of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.
The 33-year-old also remains a regular with England and a transfer to the Middle East could impact Henderson’s chances of maintaining a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad ahead of next summer’s European Championship.
Off-the-pitch factors are also set to come under consideration with Henderson having been vocal in his support of the LGBTQI+ community and fans. However, homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia.
