Ten Hag insists he will decide Manchester United captain

Erik ten Hag has insisted that he will decide who captains Manchester United this season and not leave the decision to a squad vote.

Harry Maguire is the current captain at Manchester United, but the defender has been linked with an exit after struggling for regular first-team football last season.

The England international started just eight games in the Premier League and his status as captain is under threat, regardless of whether he remains at Old Trafford.

The Athletic are reporting that Maguire is keen to fight for his place in the manager’s plans, but the defender has effectively found himself as fifth-choice centre-back under Ten Hag. Gareth Southgate has also warned the 30-year-old that his place with England is under threat if he cannot secure regular football.

Raphael Varane captained an inexperienced Manchester United side during the club’s 2-0 friendly win over Leeds on Wednesday, while Bruno Fernandes wore the armband for long periods last season and would be favourite to succeed Maguire as club captain.

Ten Hag has insisted that the final decision will come from him and that he will not leave selecting a captain to a squad vote.

“No, I don’t let the dressing room vote. It is up to me,” the Dutchman said.
