Raheem Sterling ‘not particularly happy’ with England omission

Gareth Southgate has said that Raheem Sterling is ‘not particularly happy’ after being left out of the England squad for September’s international fixtures with Ukraine and Scotland.

Southgate has named his squad for the upcoming internationals and has chosen to leave Sterling out of his plans, despite an impressive start to the season for the Chelsea winger.

The 28-year-old has not been called up since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar last winter, but has started the new season in fine form and scored twice in Friday’s 3-0 win over Luton at Stamford Bridge.

Southgate admits it was a difficult decision to omit the 82-cap winger and revealed that Sterling has been left disappointed by his exclusion.

“I didn’t want to leave any attacking players out. A lot of competition for places in that area behind the nine,” Southgate told a press conference.

“Really happy to see him do well for Chelsea, but everyone has started the season well.

“Raheem’s not particularly happy with that.”
